The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the best places to spot black bears in the United States. To increase your chances of seeing these magnificent creatures, here are some tips on where to find them.
Cades Cove
Cades Cove is a popular spot for visitors to the Smoky Mountains, and it’s also one of the best places to spot black bears. The cove is a large, open valley that is home to a variety of wildlife, including bears. You can drive the 11-mile loop road through the cove, and there are several pull-offs where you can stop and look for bears.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is another excellent spot for bear sightings. This 5.5-mile one-way road winds through the forest, and there are plenty of opportunities to see bears along the way. Keep your eyes peeled, especially in the early morning or late evening when bears are most active.
Cataloochee Valley
Cataloochee Valley is a remote area of the park that is less visited by tourists. However, it’s also one of the best places to see bears. The valley is home to a large population of bears, and there are several hiking trails that provide excellent opportunities for bear sightings.
Safety First
Remember, bears are wild animals and should be treated with respect. Always keep a safe distance from bears and never approach them. If you encounter a bear, make loud noises and slowly back away. And never, under any circumstances, feed the bears.
If you are staying in a mountain cabin during your time in the Smoky’s don’t forget to keep a look out there too! Lots of guests see black bears just hanging around their cabins. Best of luck!
